Over many
years a Carpenter has been trained under the general heading of ‘Carpentry and
Joinery’. This general heading encompasses the full scope of the traditional
carpentry trade that stems back years.
Today, because
the building industry has been evolving rapidly, the trade of Carpenter is
beginning to be categorised into more specialised trade areas that are
more specific to work being carried out. This means that training may be a
shortened time frame that is more relevant to work being carried out by
the individual on site:
A Roof Carpenter is
generally works in a team of three or more. They construct roofs using
lightweight plantation pine, lightweight steels or on occasion, heavy steels.
Good roof carpentry is crucial to the development of a quality home, due to the
exposure to wind pressures and bearing the load of roof cladding.
A Fixing Carpenter usually
works under cover and will mostly fix and fit doors, locks, mouldings, handles,
shelving, decorative brackets and specialty items. Once the house has been
completed, a fixing carpenter comes back prior to handover to make the finishing touches to homes,
installing towel rails and soap dishes and making adjustments to all the door
furniture.
A Joiner is primarily a factory based trade
that specialises in the manufacturing
of finished timber products. Examples of joinery include timber door and window frames, special
cappings, staircases and fireplaces.
A Formworker crafts the supporting framework and
forms or moulds for concrete pouring especially on two storey
projects. This formwork has to be accurate to engineer details to accommodate
all the building systems to the project, support the weight of the concrete
during the placement and curing period and to resist leaking of moisture from
concrete until setting times achieved.
A Cabinet
Maker will specialise in the manufacture and onsite installation of
cabinets to kitchens, bathrooms and laundry utilities
There
is the choice of any of these specific areas or the general Carpentry
and Joinery which can encompasses most of these depending on the electives
chosen.
As a
Carpentry apprentice on
residential jobs, main roles will include the construction of the roof framework with timber wall frames
and floor frames chosen on some projects including exterior cladding finishes.
