What is a school based apprenticeship?

A school based apprenticeship is a scheme where the apprentice completes their school studies up to year 12 at the same time as partaking in part time training towards an apprenticeship.  It is certainly worth looking in to as most employers prefer apprentices with sufficient literacy and numeracy skills.

What are the benefits of achieving a nationally recognised trade qualification?

The building and construction industry promotes fact that all trades should have achieved formal qualifications. The industry is currently identifying the existing workforce as those that either already have their trade qualifications or those that intend on applying for recognition of their skills (attained by an RPL Recognition of Prior Learning process).

These recognised individuals will eventually be preferred to those that may not have achieved this status. With this thought in mind, the ABN group are providing support to any trades that wish to move with such accreditation.

Another benefit of a trade qualification is clearly possessing a sense of personal pride and achievement, to be able to publicly quote or display your qualification and to confidently and rightfully pass on your skills to train other apprentices for prosperity.

What if I don't know what trade I want to do for my apprenticeship?

A trade pre-apprenticeship course at TAFE or other Registered Training Organisations is highly recommended for people who are unsure of what trade is best suited to them. A pre-apprenticeship is a full-time courseyou can choose to complete before you sign on to do an apprenticeship.

Advantages of doing a pre-apprenticeship course:

  • A pre-apprenticeshipcourse will allow you to try out a trade before committing to a long term contract or Training Agreement with an employer. You can try a trade and see if it really suits you before committing to a longer term apprenticeship.
  • It increases your competitiveness in getting an apprenticeship. You will have an edge over someone whoisuntrained when applying for anapprenticeship with an employer if you can demonstrate you already have some skills.
  • It gives you advanced standing in apprenticeship studies. A pre-apprentice course will have already taught you some things you will learn as an apprentice, so you can skip those units that teach skills in which you are already competent.
  • The BCITF offer a $250.00 subsidy to the successful completion of a pre apprenticeship course to assist in the cost of the TAFE course.
  • Pre-apprentices traditionally have extremely high rates of success in gaining apprenticeships after their training. Placement success rates of 90-100% are not unusual.

How long does it take to become a fully qualified tradesperson?

As people complete their apprenticeships at varied rates, training these days is increasingly being assessed on competencies met rather than a specific time frame. Depending on the trade and apprenticeship terms selected, timeframes can range from 2 to 4 years, or 12 to 18 months for traineeships.

There is a big difference between completing a formal trade qualification and being a fully qualified trade with the maturity to contract independently.
