Celebrating Pride Month at Home Collective

At ABN Group, we believe that everyone deserves a place to belong and actively work to acknowledge the diversity within our workplace, industry and community when we can.

We believe that our homes and our offices aren’t just buildings; they’re places where you get to be exactly who you are. It’s one of the reasons why we celebrate Pride Month.

June Pride came out of the different LGBTQIA+ liberation movements in Australia, the US, UK and other countries. With timing aligned with the 1969 Stonewall riots, it’s grown into an international celebration of community, diversity and change.

For us, it’s an opportunity to acknowledge the progress made over the decades and the work still to be done, while also celebrating the diversity of our employees, customers, families, suppliers and the wider community.

As part of our annual Pride tradition, we collaborated with queer artist Steph Hughes to create a series of original window decals for Home Collective in both Leederville and Bunbury.

About the artworks

Installed at the end of May, Steph’s concept brings a Pride party to life in full, vibrant colour. At the front doors, a DJ and dancers set the scene.

Music and joy flows through every window as a rainbow thread and dancing figures carry the energy from panel to panel.

To me pride is joy, the ability to be exactly who you are, and the united power of community, says Steph.

“In this mural I wanted to capture the energy of celebrating together, music weaving through the scene like a shared heartbeat.”

Steph draws a diverse cast of characters, representing a range of nationalities, gender identities and abilities. There are bikes and buses, walkers and swimmers, stick figures playing on hills, ABN home designs and community moments tucked into every corner.

WA’s land, sea and unmistakable wildlife all make an appearance too, with black swans, black cockatoos, Painted Lady butterflies and even Dockers and Eagles represented.

About the artist

Steph Hughes is an artist and musician based in Naarm (Melbourne), where she lives with her partner and kids. She loves bikes, books, country music and communing at Bunnings.

Her description of herself as a “draw-er put on this planet to help others through the fabulous medium of doodling” tells you everything you need to know about Steph.

With work spanning books, murals, editorial and community art projects for organisations like Oxfam, Melbourne Museum and the Guide Dogs, Steph’s hand-drawn, line-driven work tricks the eye.

What seems simple on the surface is endlessly detailed up close and encompasses community and connection at the heart of everything she makes. This project is no exception.
