ABN Training

Empowering the future of our industry today

In 2004 we launched ABN Training, our registered WA training organisation, to address the growing need for skilled tradespeople in Western Australia.

Since then we have trained more than 1,600 apprentices, spearheaded numerous building apprentice reforms and won dozens of awards.

ABN Group employs more apprentices than any other builder in Australia. That’s because apprentices are the future of the building industry and we are here to support and empower that future.

Our apprenticeships

We offer a wide range of building and construction apprenticeships:

Bricklaying  |  Cabinet Making  |  Carpentry & Joinery  |  Concreting  |  Fixing Carpentry  |  Glazing  |  Painting & Decorating  |  Plastering  |  Plumbing & Gas Fitting  |  Roof Plumbing |  Stone Masonry  |  Wall & Floor Tiling  |  Wall & Ceiling Fixing

All apprenticeships are available in Perth and some are available in the South West.

Frequently asked questions

Where are ABN Training apprenticeships based?

Our apprenticeships are based solely in Western Australia. All are offered in Perth and some of our trades also offer apprenticeships in Bunbury. For more information about which trades are available in which region, contact ABN Training via email or call us on 08 9200 4500.

How do I apply for an ABN Training apprenticeship?

Complete an online application form. Alternatively, you can email us or call us on 08 9200 4500.

What are the prerequisites for the ABN Training Apprenticeship Program?

You have done your own research into trade types and your suitability, or be prepared to undertake work experience to discover so. Are you hardworking, honest, respectful, motivated and reliable? Are you a team player? Our trade partners are particularly interested in applicants who have the motivation to succeed and the desire to learn and grow.  Relevant work experience or studies are an advantage, as are sufficient English and maths skills.

How long does it take to become a fully qualified tradesperson?

As people complete their apprenticeships at varied rates, training is increasingly assessed on competencies met rather than a specific time frame. Depending on the trade and apprenticeship terms selected, time frames can range from two to four years. There is a big difference between completing a formal trade qualification and being a fully qualified tradesperson with the maturity to contract independently.

What do I get once I've completed the ABN Group Apprenticeship Program?

Once you complete and pass all apprenticeship program competencies, you will receive a nationally accredited trade certificate. This recognises that you are a competent tradesperson and arerecognised by employers across Australia. We also present a certificate of acknowledgement from the ABN Group in completing what is considered to be an outstanding achievement.

Is ABN Group a Registered Group Training Organisation?

Yes. ABN Training is listed on the National Group Training Register, which shows all Group Training Organisations that comply with national standards set by vocational education and training Ministers and are eligible to use the Group Training National logo. All organisations listed have been recognised as compliant with the National Standards for GTOs and for State and Territory Training Authorities.

What are the benefits of achieving a nationally recognised trade qualification?

The building and construction industry prefers tradespeople who have achieved trade qualifications, whether they are formal qualifications or skills recognised through an RPL process. People with recognised trade qualifications are generally preferred over those without, meaning more job opportunities and earning potential. Possessing a trade qualification also provides a sense of personal pride and achievement. You can publicly quote or display your qualification and confidently pass on your skills by training new apprentices.

What career opportunities are available after completing my apprenticeship?

As one of Australia’s largest residential building groups, ABN Group has many trade positions available at any one time for apprentices who achieve high-quality standards throughout their training.

How do I provide feedback about ABN Training?

ABN Training strives to provide exceptional training and mentoring support to its apprentices and host trainers.  Feedback is important to us as it helps us improve our service to WA’s young tradespeople. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we are doing and where we can make improvements. Please complete our feedback form and our Trade Relations Manager will contact you to discuss your feedback.
