ABN Group endorses the WA Government’s recent building legislation announcement

Today, as announced by Minister for Commerce Dr Tony Buti MLA, the West Australian State Government will strengthen the powers of regulators to investigate financially troubled builders, alongside a review of the Home Building Contracts Act 1991 (HBCA) and associated laws.

As one of WA’s leading building groups, ABN Group welcomes the Cook Government’s positive reforms, which will bolster protections for the customers who place their trust in building companies to bring their dream homes to life. These initiatives are designed to enhance the experience of customers building in WA and will make it easier for the Government to act decisively when builders are failing to deliver on their promises.

“At ABN Group, we understand that building a home is often the greatest expenses and investments most people will take on in their lifetime,” said Dale Alcock, Managing Director of ABN Group. “It’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

“Every promise we make to our customers is one we treat with genuine care and commitment.”

We believe these changes will help ensure all builders in Western Australia are financially equipped to meet their contractual commitments and deliver homes for their customers with confidence.

Given the sheer number of construction companies that have collapsed around the country – over 110 in WA in the past six months alone – and the ongoing demand for quality housing, we greatly support the Government’s steps to improve the ways they protect consumers and keep builders in check.

ABN Group fully endorses the Government’s decision to review key aspects of home building contract legislation, introduce amendments that strengthen regulators’ powers to act on financial concerns, and implement new initiatives aimed at increasing consumer and industry confidence.

ABN Group also strongly supports the planned review of the Home Building Contracts Act.

The review of the Home Building Contracts Act will enable changes that ensure legislation not only remains contemporary and relevant to the way our industry operates, but also will continue to shape it into the future. With continuing demand for housing, these changes are both timely and necessary, providing West Australians with greater confidence that the home building industry is being effectively governed.

As leaders in our industry, the Group will be proudly championing these announcements and supporting their implementation. We believe that everyone building a home – whether they’re our customers or not – deserves to have confidence in the builders they engage with and assurance that their home will be delivered as promised.
